About Bongo Racing
My name is Robin, born 1969, and I’m from Ballymena in Northern Ireland.
Husband, Father, Foster Carer and Sim Racer.
I’ve been a gamer all my life, from the original arcade machines upwards.
As a young buck I raced motocross from I was 5 years old up until I was 19. So, the love of motorsport of all kinds has been baked in from a very early age.
Older yes, fire gone….absolutely not.
The Birth of Bongo Racing
In September of 22, when I felt I had taken my virtual racing as far as I could on a console, I fell into the sim racing rabbit hole and invested in a PC and basic wheel setup. It’s all got a little out of hand since then.
I’m also a host on a weekly Video Game Podcast, The Overseas Connection. I already had the bones of a streaming setup so on a whim I thought it would fun to stream my first couple of races on LFM.
From those streams something I never envisaged started to happen……..you guys……a rapidly growing community was born, and that was the start of Bongo Racing.
Life Changing Decisions
In late October 23 the company I had worked with for over 20 years had a major shake up and I was faced with a strange and very unexpected dilemma. Stay on, take a redundancy package or accept one of the several offers from other companies within the industry or…….shake life up?
I chose to shake it up.
My hobby is now my occupation and what a way to work. What do they say, find something that you love to do and you’ll never work another day. Well, I wouldn’t go as far as that but I love my sim racing and being able to expand this into a business is very exciting.
This isn’t any easy option, it’s hard graft but mega fun at the same time. My quality of life has massively improved. Being able to spend so much more time at home with Judith my boys and our foster kids is great. Do I miss the corporate world? Now and again is the honest answer. I travelled a lot and I miss some of that but I mostly miss the people I worked with and ‘most’ of my clients.
Thankfully, Bongo Racing is meeting and surpassing a lot of those needs. The wonderful people are here and the challenge and opportunity to grow is massive. I’m lovin’ it.
What’s the key ethos behind Bongo Racing?
Honestly, as a ‘mature’ racer I was completely bamboozled by all the terms, rules, setups and software surrounding sim racing.
I want to use my videos and content to help older racers get on online, go faster without feeling that they are alone and having to work everything out by themselves.
As the community has grown, and we’ve added resources such as Practice Servers, Liveries, Regular Races, Championships and Training Sessions, I’ve been blown away at how much the community has stepped up with old man enthusiasm, to help.
We have amazing members who freely share their time and knowledge helping new racers lift their pace, hone racecraft and as a bonus all have great laughs while doing it.
So to pin a word on it I strive to make it EPIC. Entertaining, Passionate, Informative, Community.
Want to know how to get started?
Bongo Racing is the right place for you.
I’m not interested in making up the numbers on the grid. I want to be at the pointy end and with you guys right beside me.
The first thing to do is join the Bongo Racing Discord. From there you’ll be warmly welcomed into the community and gain access to our practice servers.
From there, introduce yourself, get on track with us and get a feel for how we race. Competitive, fair racing is what you will find with a good dose of ridiculous immature humour on the side.
Hope to see you on track soon.
Rig History – It’s never finished.
